Packaging plays an important role in global supply chains, but it is also a major source of carbon emissions for many industries, including the pharmaceuticals sector.

As a sustainable business leader, Centrient recently began an initiative to minimise the environmental impact associated with our product packaging. In 2017, one of our manufacturing sites began the so-called ‘Pack Smart’ initiative to replace the high-density polyethene (HDPE) drums with corrugated boxes.

HDPE drums have a larger carbon and water footprint than corrugated boxes. These boxes also take up less storage space, which results in less energy being consumed during cooling and transportation. The ‘Pack Smart’ project also supports the circular economy, as the boxes are made from approximately 70% recycled paper.
